The sargo is a member of the grunt family (haemulidae) and can be found from coastal Central California and south to all the Baja Peninsula. Typically sargo can be found over rocky bottoms and within kelp forests. They primarily feed on crustaceans, mullusks and bryozoans and are a favorite among near-shore fishermen. Though these fish can be found in waters up to 130 feet deep they more commonly reside in shallower water. Also known as the “China croaker” the sargo can reach up to 22 inches in length.
